Education

As a major cultural centre, Education has been a driving force in St.Andrews. While Edinburgh is the Capital City and Glasgow the largest City in Scotland, the oldest University in Scotland is that of St.Andrews.

The University is closely integrated with the Burgh (pronounced Borough), and was recognised by the Papal Bull of antipope Benedict XIII in 1413. In 1432 King James I, placed the University under his personal protection, exempting its members from taxation. The University of St Andrews is the oldest in Scotland, and the third oldest in Britain. Three colleges, St Salvator's (1450), St Leonard's (1512) and St Mary's (1537), gradually evolved into the modern University, including the amalgamation in 1747 of St Salvator's and St Leonard's Colleges to form the United College, where all the arts and science subjects are studied today. St Mary's has maintained its identity as a college of divinity (religious studies). In 1897 Queen's College Dundee joined the University, covering medical and applied science. That association ended in 1967 with the foundation of the University of Dundee. The University of St Andrews is renowned around the world for teaching and research.

Education in the Burgh is not just about the University. In 1832 Madras College was founded by Dr. Andrew Bell, using principles he derived while in Madras, India. It opened in 1833. Madras College, St.Katherine's and St.Leonard's School (founded in 1877 and claiming to be Scotland's leading girls school) continue a fine tradition of schooling.
